About the Item
Carved from a single piece of soft, light wood, this refined Lega lukwakongo mask displays the minimalist elegance characteristic of Bwami society art. The oval face features a long narrow nose, half-closed almond-shaped eyes with small perforations, and a discreetly incised mouth. The edge is pierced for attachment, with remains of old plant fiber cord still present.
Such masks were not worn on the face but attached to a wooden frame and used in Bwami initiation ceremonies, where they served as moral and philosophical symbols rather than as dance masks. The smooth surface and deep natural patina testify to age and ritual use.
