Vintage handwoven Kente Textile. Ewe of Ghana, West Africa. Cotton and silk, mid-20th century. 118 inches long by 69.5 inches wide. Kente cloths are prestige textiles, with striking colors and geometric patterns, and can be worn by both men and women. This piece is a larger men's textile, and comprises 24 narrow 3 inch strips handwoven individually on a double-heddle horizontal strip loom, and then sewn together. The weaving is mostly done by men. The design comes from the interaction and alternation of basically a striped warp pattern and weft faced patterning. Colors and patterns have names and symbolic meaning. The origin of Kente cloths is traced to the Ashanti of West Africa, where they were important prestige cloths reserved for royalty and persons of importance. But other groups in the region under the influence of the Ashanti also wove and wore these cloths. The Ewe from whom this textile comes were less hierarchical, more egalitarian, and while the Kente weavings were still prestige cloths, their patterns and availability were less strictly controlled. The use of silk was introduced into the tradition in the 17th Century via European trade. The size and visual impact of this textile would make for a striking bed cover. It would also serve well as a wall decoration. Condition: The skirt is in good condition. There are a very few small holes, and repairs of very minor tears. Most of these are near the selvage.
