About the Item

This is a very fine Church Chalice carved by a Master Carver from the Kuba people of Congo. This exceptional piece demostrates not only the Christian Ecclesiastical influence of the Europeans in the area but also the dexterity of the local carvers who were converted to Christianity by the Europeans. The original shape of the Chalice whilst European has been adorned with classic geometric shapes found in many Kuba artefacts and carvings. These complex geometric patterns would represent longevity and lineage within Kuba culture . Carved from a very dense and rare wood the piece has developed a beautiful honey patina from almost 100 years of use. In near perfect condition and would date from the 1930' or before. The piece was collected in 1940 in situ and comes from the original Belgian family collection.
