About the Item
A strongly carved Figural Column by noted Coast Salish artist, Lance Joseph Joseph was born in 1957 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. This carved figural totem, larger than life, depicts a tribal figure, possibly a chief, wrapped in blanket and standing in the midst of iconic Northwest Coast traditional animals including a Raven, Eagle and Killer Whale.
Signed on verso and dated 2002.
Dimensions: 17" W, 7" D and 87" H
Condition: The overall condition is very good with only acceptable minor wear and slight paint loss which does not detract from the powerful presentation.

This large pole was “donated to a church on the northern tip of Vancouver Island for a fundraiser” sometime around 1905. The pole is carved in a folk-art style that is correct for the period. The imagery on this pole is quite fascinating and includes a large bird whose wings form the face of a composite creature holding what appears to be a whale or fish.
