About the Item

"Large Fijian Bowl On Four Feet – Fiji Islands, Melanesia – 19th / Early 20th Century" Impressive traditional wooden bowl from the Fiji Islands, carved from a single block of solid hardwood. Bowls of this type, raised on four conical legs, are characteristic of early Fijian craftsmanship and are notable for their sculptural presence and substantial scale. The vessel features a wide and deep interior with a gently flared rim, indicating prolonged functional use, likely connected to food preparation or communal and ceremonial contexts. The interior surface displays an authentic, time-worn patina, with areas smoothed through long-term handling and use. The underside is convex and supported by four robust, integral legs. Two of the legs show old repairs, clearly visible and consistent with the age of the object. These historic restorations, executed using traditional methods, attest to the bowl’s long life and continuous use, enhancing its authenticity and ethnographic value. An old cord element remains attached beneath the bowl, possibly originally used for carrying or suspended storage. Overall, the surface shows a rich and even patina, with natural wear, small irregularities, and age-related marks fully in keeping with a 19th to early 20th century Oceanic object.
