About the Item

A fabulous and exquisitely made traditional leather wallet pouch, produced by Tuareg people. Likely for the tourist market in the mid 20th century. The Tuareg people are part of the larger Berber group, one of the oldest indigenous populations in North Africa. As desert-dwelling nomads, the Tuareg have long relied on their resourcefulness and skills to survive in harsh environments. Their mastery of leatherworking stems from a need for durable, functional items that could endure the desert's conditions. Over time, leather craft became more than just a practical skill—it evolved into an art form. The Tuareg artisans honed their craft, incorporating geometric patterns, symbols, and vibrant colors into their leatherwork. These elements not only added beauty to their creations but also held cultural and spiritual significance. Perfectly fit for purpose, when closed 18/11/3cm when fully open 45/18cm
