Pair of hand-carved hardwood stools attributed to the Oromo people of Ethiopia, 1970s. Each stool is sculpted from a single block of dense wood, with a broad concave seat supported by three stout tripod legs. The surfaces show a dark, burnished patina that highlights their age and tactile quality.
Traditionally, Oromo stools served as personal seats carried by men, functioning both as utilitarian objects and as symbols of social standing. Their compact, portable form made them essential daily companions, while their carved geometry embodied status, identity, and cultural continuity.
By the mid-20th century, stools of this type began to circulate beyond Ethiopia, prized by collectors and designers for their minimalist silhouette and raw sculptural presence. Modernist architects and decorators - from Le Corbusier and Charlotte Perriand to Axel Vervoordt - admired African stools for the way they fused function and form. They also directly inspired John Dickinson's celebrated plaster tripod tables of the 1970s, which translated these elemental forms into one of the most iconic expressions of American design.
Today, Oromo stools are highly sought after not only as ethnographic artifacts but also as timeless accent pieces, equally at home in a curated tribal collection or a sophisticated contemporary interior.
