About the Item

Early carved wooden whistle from the Pende people, south-western Democratic Republic of the Congo. The piece displays a stylised anthropomorphic form typical of Pende art, with arched mouth opening, lateral sound holes and a deep dark patina developed through prolonged use and traditional treatments such as smoke and oils. Such whistles were used in social and ritual contexts, including ceremonies, dances and initiation rites. They were not toys, but functional and symbolic sound instruments within Pende culture. Attractive aged patina with visible signs of use and minor losses, consistent with age and authenticity.
