Framed Riga Gound from Nigeria With Tribal Motifs
Located in Jimbaran, Bali
A framed Riga Gound from Nigeria. Elite Nigerian men wore grand, flowing garments known by various names: riga (Hausa), agbádá (Yorùbá), boubou (French), and mbubb (Wolof). This particular strip-woven riga features a off-white, very light grey tone with silk accents adding contrast. Skilled embroiderers—often trained in Arabic calligraphy—incorporated motifs once imbued with protective Islamic symbolism. Central to the textile is a leaf (gambiya) motif, linked to the Nupe people. A spiral design symbolizes the wearer’s spiritual journey toward God. The hem is lined with magenta silk, imported via trans-Saharan trade routes. Historically admired across cultures, the riga remains a cornerstone of pan-Nigerian male national dress today.
This framed Riga Gound has a unique back story. Having owned a prominent antiques shop in Hong-Kong for more than two decades it was common for antique dealers to sometimes come to the shop and present items to sell...

Monumental Oceanic Asmat People Carved Painted Wooden War Shield
Located in Forney, TX
A monumental, rare and important Oceanic Papuan Asmat People tribal carved war shield from the first half of the 20th century, collected from the coast of the headhunting tribe in Papua New Guinea, a Provincial Indonesian island in the mid 20th century.
Among the Asmat, war shields are the most powerful symbolic element of a warrior's equipment, and have many layers of meaning. Traditionally, they were functional items used to protect warriors in battle by deflecting an enemy's spears and arrows. The carved and painted images on the surface of the shields were also intended to frighten the enemy and symbolize the power of the ancestors.

Small, Rare African Dogon Wooden Carved Pharmacy Cabinet Mali 1980s
Located in Salzburg, AT
Small African pharmacy cabinet made of wood of the Dogon ethnic group.
This small cabinet with two movable flaps on three legs was designed to store medicinal preparations made according to the advice of the elders who had been initiated into the science of trees or "Jiridon".
The walls are carved with figures of the mythical ancestors Nommos, genii associated with the creation of the world, providing health and fertility and activating healing power.
The Dogon are a people famous for their cosmogony, esotericism, myths and legends. Their population is estimated at about 300,000 souls living in the southwest of the Niger Loop in the Mopti region of Mali (Bandiagara, Koro, Banka), near Douentza and in part of northern Burkina (northwest of Ouahigouya). The villages are often located on the tops of scree slopes on the flanks of the hills and have unique architecture.
The history of the migration and settlement of the Dogon (about ten main groups, about fifteen different languages), is characterized by several hypotheses. Some historians believe that the Dogon fled after an attack from an area west of their present location.
Today, the artisanal blacksmiths of the Dogon, who form an endogamous caste called Irim, make weapons and tools and also work with wood.
They are "masters of fire" and are said to heal burns (Huib Blom).
Satin brown patina.
Ex collection of African art from France.
