About the Item
Early and rare mask from Gabon, Central Africa, created by the Tsogho peoples. Powerful large mask with carved open eyes, and black painted eyes above, below heavy carved eyebrows. Front of mask with weathered eroded surface, back and inside of mask heavily eroded from age. Breaks to back rim of the mask with some small sections missing.
It is in good condition, appropriate for its age, use, and medium. Well used with early dry patina, chips and erosion in places. Scuffs and nicks here and there.
early 20th century, possibly earlier.
12 inches high on very heavy duty custom metal base, total height 17 inches.
