About the Item
This magnificent gold bracelet was made for Ashanti royalty.
The Ashanti Kingdom's wealth was significantly based on gold-mining and trading in gold, as well as agriculture. The kingdom continued to expand until under Asantehene Osei Bonsu (reigned 1801/4–1824) and Asante territory covered most of what is now modern Ghana. As the territory expanded the rulers of the Asante Kingdom increasingly centralized power and control in Kumasi. Gold regalia, gold dust currency and gold as a trading commodity dominated the entire Asante economy, including the coastal trade with Europeans
This beautiful piece comes from the collection of Constance McCormick Fearing (1926–2012), Montecito, California. She was descended from the McCormick dynasty. Through the McCormick Harvesting Machine Company and later, the International Harvester Company and other investments, the McCormicks became one of the wealthiest families in America.
