About the Item
An exceedingly rare Museum Quality traditional Men’s Sword of the Dayak Tribal Peoples of Borneo, Indonesia. An older, traditional piece made from Carved Wood, Steel, Antler, Inlaid Iron, Bark, Leather and Natural Woven Fiber, the Mandau is the quintessential item for the Hunt and formerly, for intertribal jungle disputes concerning land and resources. The Mandau has a Brass inlaid Sword Blade and has an exquisitely carved Antler Handle with Dyed Tufts and tightly woven natural fiber. The Sheath is covered with traditional incised and raised Carving on one side, the other bears a Bark Sheath which holds the Mat Knife which is traditionally used for carving and utilitarian purposes while in the jungle or on a hunt. The Mat knife is missing its curved blade however the Double Figure handle carving is exquisite with a Nude Male figure being held up on the head of a Kneeling figure.
Condition: Please see detail photos. There is various expected and enhancing age related wear including a few end chips to the wood sheath and a break in the woven fiber roping which does not detract from the powerful and authentic presentation.
The Mandau measures 33” long by 3” wide by 2.25” deep.
