About the Item

A very fine mid 20th century example of a circumcusion mask from the Salampasu people of Congo. These masks were danced prior to young boys circumcision ceremonies to scare away evil spirits during these comming of age ceremonies . Blackened with earth pigments and intact kaolin covered teeth . The elaborated coiffure is formed by bending damp reeds into place . Each mask has its own character and is a fine statement piece for any room.
