About the Item
A rare Museum quality Traditional Men’s Sword known as a Mandau. Used by the Dayak while on the Hunt and in former times in disputes regarding hunting rights and land boundaries. This Mandau is made from Steel, Carved Horn, Carved Wood, Wool, Bark, Tin and Natural Woven materials. The Sword blade is razor sharp and has good weight, the Handle is Intricately Carved in Traditional Animistic form and has tightly woven natural Material on the Grip. The Sheath has exquisite woven designs which hold a cut-out Tin decorative or Ritual element. The Sheath has attached tightly woven Natural Material cord and Colored Wool Tassels and a Talon shaped Talisman attached. The main Sheath has a traditional Bark side sheath which holds another small knife known as a Mat Knife, traditionally used at Camp for utilitarian or ritual carving. The handle is a dark hardwood with a beautifully and sensitively carved Human Head surmounted by a God’s head or possibly a Mask. The Mat Knife retains the curved and sharp metal blade.
