About the Item
Superb Large Antique Maasai Shield – East Africa
Origin: Kenya/Tanzania, East Africa
Culture: Maasai
Period: early 20th century
Material: Hide, natural pigments, and wood
Dimensions: Approximately 105 cm (41inches) height
This is a superb and visually striking antique Maasai shield, distinguished by its large oval form and exceptional state of preservation. Crafted from thick, stiffened hide and reinforced around the edges with sinew-bound wood, the shield displays bold and symbolic geometric designs in natural red, black, and white pigments.
The painted decoration is deeply traditional:
Central vertical column of interlocking motifs
Flanked by bold triangular and sunburst-like patterns
The dynamic symmetry and contrast in coloration reflect the distinctive Maasai aesthetic and cultural symbolism
Traditionally used by Maasai warriors (Morans), such shields were both practical tools of defense and powerful status symbols—often personalized and carried into battle and ceremonial events.
This piece is authentic and old, not a tourist reproduction. The surface shows appropriate age-related wear and pigment fading consistent with historical use and age. Rare to find in this large size and condition.
A museum-quality artifact ideal for collectors of African tribal art, ethnographic weaponry, or design-oriented interior spaces.
