About the Item

This is a pair of very fine Royal Robes from the Ewe people of Togo in West Africa. These textiles will be worn at Royal ceremonies such as Weddings and the birth of Royal children . Handwoven from handspun cotton and all natural dyes. The Chiefs wife would have worn one piece around her waist and the other around her shoulders. Both pieces have an intact red border on one side. The vibrant colours and pattern whilst created in the later part of the 19th century have a contemporary look which would compliment any room especially as a beach house wall hanging or table covering.
