An exceptional ironwood war club originating from Tonga, Polynesia. 18th century and hand carved with complex geometric patterns running the length of the shaft.

A Tongan war club like this Pakipaki was more than just a weapon, it was also a symbol of male rank and status.
If a warrior achieved success in battle, a new section of his club would be decorated with tata - geometric designs and patterns, including chevrons, rods and triangles. These intricate markings, applied to the wood surface using a shark-tooth tool attached to a short wooden handle, signify courage and triumph. Since this club is completely incised and its base decorated with four human figures and one botanical motif, it probably belonged to a prized warrior.
