Vintage Abstract Stone Sculpture of African Giraffes

About the Item

This vintage abstract modern sculpture of giraffes loving family mother father and children is hand carved by Emanuel Makoni. This African art form is known as Shona sculpture because it is hand carved by the Shona people of Zimbabwe. The Shona people of Zimbabwe have been hand sculpting stone into works of art for nearly a thousand years. Even though the craft is ancient, the style has continually evolved and the carvings created today are both beautiful and elegant. The contemporary, yet eternal, shape of these sculptures bring splendor to the home and compliments any decor. The themes these sculptures portray represent esteemed values in the Shona culture of family, love, life and nature. Handcrafted from serpentine stone the very modern African sculpture colors vary from black to brown to green. Height 11" Width 7" Depth 3" Artist: Emanuel Makoni Made in: Zimbabwe A central belief and practice in traditional Shona culture is ukama, which means living together in close family relationships. Family ties are all-important to these people, and from birth through death and beyond, Shona families are bound together in the mutual respect, support and love that is the greater extended family -- ukama. These sculptures started with the artist traveling in the Zimbabwe countryside in search of a particularly powerful stone spirit. The stone is dug out of the earth and chiseled (for weeks or months depending on the size and hardness of the stone) to reveal a colorful soul which finally appears in the final washing stages, just before firing and polishing. Sculptures like these evoke the feelings of harmony and peace -- ukama --.
