About the Item

A wonderful headrest from the Karamojong People of Uganda in eastern Africa. It is made out of one piece of wood with the legs having a nice bend shape, supporting on a circular block. The neckrest is decorated at the sides with beautiful abstract carvings in the wood. The piece shows signs of usage and is in great condition. Men in East Africa use headrests both as pillows and as indicators of status. It is popularly believed that the headrest serves a protective function by elevating the head off the ground during sleep, thereby preventing any possible attacks by snakes or scorpions.
