About the Item
Beautiful Yaka flywhisk from the southwest of the Democratic Republic of Congo, dating from the early 20th century.
Such objects were reserved for chiefs and diviners (nganga), serving both as symbols of prestige and authority and as ritual instruments during ceremonies and spiritual practices.
The handle, finely carved from dense local wood, features a stylized female figure with a ribbed crested hairstyle, characteristic of Yaka artistic expression. The angular face, prominent nose, and half-closed eyes convey dignity and spiritual strength.
The lower part is wrapped with braided plant fibers, securing a tuft of animal hair (likely horse or antelope), forming the functional whisk.
This piece reflects the refined craftsmanship and ancestral symbolism of the Yaka people, where the female figure represents fertility, lineage continuity, and spiritual protection.
