About the Item

Carved wood standing Janus back to back male/female divination figure from the Yaka people of DRC Congo, Africa. Male figure side with open mouth with exposed carved teeth. Female side with traces of red and white pigments around eyes and ringing each face, dividing them vertically from side to side. Wear, polish and deep patina from traditional use. Both sides with hands clasped at waist. According to Arthur Bourgeois, author of "Yaka" by 5 Continents, figures such as this were used by the diviner of the village to help with healing and protecting the village. Created mid 20th century or earlier. The figure is 17 1/2" inches mounted on a custom metal stand. From early CA USA collection, previously Lacy collection, CA.
