About the Item

Exceptional molded copper weathervane depicting a full-bodied running horse, attributed to A.L. Jewell of Waltham, Massachusetts, one of the earliest and most respected American weathervane makers. The horse is shown in dynamic stride with elongated form and finely modeled head and tail, characteristic of Jewell’s production. Constructed of molded copper with a deep, naturally developed verdigris patina from long outdoor use. Original mounting and directional attachments remains visible, consistent with authentic 19th-century examples. The surface exhibits honest wear, oxidation, and small perforations typical of early weathervanes and adds to the sculpture’s historic integrity. The surface retains a richly layered verdigris patina, developed through decades of outdoor exposure, and prized by collectors for its authenticity and visual depth. Now professionally mounted for display, this weathervane is a strong example of American folk art and architectural ornament, highly sought after by collectors of early Americana.

A weathervane in the form of a running horse, that was likely modeled after "Dexter" circa late 19th century on a custom display stand. The full body molded horse has a gilt surface with verdigris patina. Not entirely sure of the maker but possible by L. W. Cushing & Co. In Waltham or Harris. Co in Boston. The surface has been re-gilt historically likely dated from early 20th century. A lovely piece that transcends American fold art...
