About the Item
Large Venetian “George De Pigeon” Pink, Lavender, and Gold Opalescent Glass Table Lamp with Gold Foil Inclusions
The lamp is constructed from blown glass elements arranged in a tall, tapering configuration mounted on a shaped gilt wood base. The upper body is formed from lavender opalescent glass worked in vertical ribbing and shaped into a rounded dome. The lower section is composed of pink opalescent glass in the same ribbed format, narrowing toward the base. A broad collar of clear glass embedded with suspended gold foil distributed as fine gold freckles separates the two ribbed bodies. Additional clear glass components containing gold freckles form the neck and the socle, linking the opalescent sections to the stepped gilt base with a scalloped outline. All components are aligned on an internal rod that passes through the assembly, and the underside bears the impressed number W-507.
George De Pigeon opaline glass refers to decorative glass objects—most often lamps or vases—made with opaline glass, a milky, softly translucent type of glass prized for its smooth, glowing surface. Opaline glass originated in France in the late 18th century and became especially popular in the 19th and early 20th centuries. It is created by adding bone ash or other opacifiers to molten glass, producing an even, porcelain-like appearance that diffuses light beautifully. Colors are often white, pale blue, green, or pink. The materials and construction correspond to Venetian production associated with Murano workshops, with ribbed opalescent surfaces and controlled gold foil inclusions characteristic of blown glass vessels adapted for use as lamp bases. The stepped gilt base supports the full assembly and maintains the vertical configuration required for electrical mounting.
The lamp was fitted by The Marbro Lamp Company, a mid twentieth century lighting firm known for sourcing decorative objects internationally and converting them into table lamps. Marbro frequently selected Murano glass pieces for this purpose and incorporated them into its catalog of custom lighting assembled through specialized workshops.
