About the Item

The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam is one of 16 national museums in the Netherlands. Its collection includes pieces by 17th-century Dutch masters like Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Hals and provides an overview of Dutch art and history. The Rijksmuseum building, constructed by Dutch architect Pierre Cuypers, has hosted the museum since 1885. The 2-tiered Rijksmuseum 800.3 model is a faithful copy of the spherical chandelier displayed in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. While the 800.1 model is equal to its top tier and the 800.2 to its bottom tier. Reflecting Dutch design aesthetics, the Rijksmuseum 800.2 single-tier chandelier illuminates spaces with six gracefully extending solid brass arms. This is the lower tier of the full model Rijksmuseum. At 62cm high and 85cm wide, this imposing yet elegant fixture emulates a Golden Age original from the famed Rijksmuseum collection. Ornate curling metalwork borders the circular frame, exemplifying intricate embellishments crafted centuries ago. Though inspired by a historic piece, this handsome chandelier is wired along the arms for contemporary use. With its rich, lustrous sheen and masterful construction, the Rijksmuseum 800.2 pays homage to Holland's treasured metal arts legacy. Original historical moulds from the era are utilised to create the brass components. Additionally, casting is still done the old-fashioned way in a greasy type of sand called Brussels’ soil. After the crown has been varnished, skilled artisans assemble the components. Electric wires run subtly along the arms, as they are made out of solid brass. The arms and curls are soldered together. While the crowns are being put together, the electrical wiring and lighting components are covertly placed. Brink van Keulen, a family-owned business founded in 1946, upholds the art of casting by producing the highest calibre brass chandeliers. Chandeliers by Brink and van Keulen can be found in a number of prestigious churches and monumental buildings in the Netherlands and other parts of the world. Through the transmission of knowledge through many generations, Brink van Keulen has substantially aided in the preservation of the Dutch yellow casting craft. The business is the sole manufacturer of chandeliers using original casting moulds from the 17th century in all of Europe.
