About the Item
Johannes Vermeer (1632 - 1675) painted many Dutch interiors in addition to his famous “Girl with a Pearl Earring”. In the painting ""The Art of Painting"" a beautiful golden chandelier is displayed above the painter and his subject. Dutch historians have noted that such chandeliers permitted artists to demonstrate their expertise at rendering shimmering and refractive brass under changing light conditions. A true testament to their craft and artistry.
This sophisticated single-tier Vermeer 117 chandelier is a remarkable example of the refined taste of Dutch lighting design in the 19th century. Twelve elegantly curving hollow brass arms support the imposing 82cm round fixture, which is expertly manufactured from this material. The focal medallion, which is embellished with a delicate bud ornament, is the culmination of intricate metalwork ribbons that flow around the frame. This old chandelier, which is 65 cm tall and has a dominating presence, has been modernly wired and is ready for use. Invoking the splendour of 19th-century Holland, when regal pendants lit up royal galleries and ballrooms all over the country, soft glows glisten off the polished brass.
Original historical moulds from the era are utilised to create the brass components. Additionally, casting is still done the old-fashioned way in a greasy type of sand called Brussels’ soil. After the crown has been varnished, skilled artisans assemble the components. Electric crowns have bent hollow brass tubes for the arms. The arms and curls are soldered together. While the crowns are being put together, the electrical wiring and lighting components are covertly inserted.
