About the Item

Johannes Vermeer (1632 - 1675) painted many Dutch interiors in addition to his famous “Girl with a Pearl Earring”. In the painting ""The Art of Painting"" a beautiful golden chandelier is displayed above the painter and his subject. Dutch historians have noted that such chandeliers permitted artists to demonstrate their expertise at rendering shimmering and refractive brass under changing light conditions. A true testament to their craft and artistry. Evoking ornate 19th century style, the single-tier Vermeer 107 chandelier illuminates with six gracefully extending brass arms. At just 50cm high and 54cm wide, this golden fixture maintains a refined presence accented by curling metal embellishments bordering the circular frame. Though modeled centuries ago, the hollow brass chandelier is modernly wired for use, bathing today's spaces in gentle radiance. Harkening back to an era of candlelit grand halls, the petite Vermeer 107 pendant honors Holland's history of metalcraft with its warm, understated beauty and delicately curved silhouette. Original historical moulds from the era are utilised to create the brass components. Additionally, casting is still done the old-fashioned way in a greasy type of sand called Brussels’ soil. After the crown has been varnished, skilled artisans assemble the components. Electric crowns have bent hollow brass tubes for the arms. The arms and curls are soldered together. While the crowns are being put together, the electrical wiring and lighting components are covertly inserted. Brink van Keulen, a family-owned business founded in 1946, upholds the art of casting by producing the highest calibre brass chandeliers. Chandeliers by Brink and van Keulen can be found in a number of prestigious churches and monumental buildings in the Netherlands and other parts of the world. Through the transmission of knowledge through many generations, Brink van Keulen has substantially aided in the preservation of the Dutch yellow casting craft. The business is the sole manufacturer of chandeliers using original casting moulds from the 17th century in all of Europe.
