About the Item

Johannes Vermeer (1632 - 1675) painted many Dutch interiors in addition to his famous “Girl with a Pearl Earring”. In the painting ""The Art of Painting"" a beautiful golden chandelier is displayed above the painter and his subject. Dutch historians have noted that such chandeliers permitted artists to demonstrate their expertise at rendering shimmering and refractive brass under changing light conditions. A true testament to their craft and artistry. The single-tier Vermeer 110 chandelier, a fine example of 17th-century Dutch lighting design, commands attention with its 74 cm wide solid brass frame and eight gently extending arms. With curling metalwork accents encircling the body, this magnificent antique fixture maintains a subtle beauty despite being approximately 60 cm high. This timeless sculpture evokes memories of Holland's Golden Age, when vast halls and public areas were illuminated by candle-lit chandeliers. The Vermeer 110 pays respect to the master brasswork of its time while being electrified for contemporary use. Original historical moulds from the era are utilised to create the brass components. Additionally, casting is still done the old-fashioned way in a greasy type of sand called Brussels’ soil. After the crown has been varnished, skilled artisans assemble the components. Electric crowns have bent hollow brass tubes for the arms. The arms and curls are soldered together. While the crowns are being put together, the electrical wiring and lighting components are covertly inserted. Brink van Keulen, a family-owned business founded in 1946, upholds the art of casting by producing the highest calibre brass chandeliers. Chandeliers by Brink and van Keulen can be found in a number of prestigious churches and monumental buildings in the Netherlands and other parts of the world. Through the transmission of knowledge through many generations, Brink van Keulen has substantially aided in the preservation of the Dutch yellow casting craft. The business is the sole manufacturer of chandeliers using original casting moulds from the 17th century in all of Europe.
