1887 Aesthetic Movement Combination Gas Electric Chandelier

About the Item

Now this is a fascinating light and an incredible historic artifact from the very early days of electricity. It was originally a gas and electric light with the gas burners pointing up from the candles and the electric lights spreading outwards. Because electricity was both expensive and unreliable, it was combined with gas lights for greater light and reliability. Electricity in the late 1880s was a luxury and reserved for high end fixtures which is what we have here. The Victorians had a fascination with figures, monsters, dragons and all things zoomorphic and anthromorphic. Here we have an incredible center body features owls, dragons, sea serpents and cherubs. The curvalinear gas arms are meant to represent serpents and evidenced by their tail swirling around the arm end. The original antique and bronzed finish has been meticulously restored and the gas arms electrified for modern use. The electric arms have been fitted with original antique late 1880s acid etched electric shades featuring a patterned floral motif. They are shallow and ruffled and meant to show off the newly invented electric light. The chandelier is all original including the deeply embossed ceiling plate which is both decorative and a rare find. One of the best and rarest Victorian combination fixtures we have ever had. Looks even better in person.
