About the Item

Our chandelier can be identified as Baguès, circa 1950, based on a similar model published in the magazine Plasir de France that very year. Stylistically, it represents what Baguès was, and remains, best known for, namely, modern interpretations of historical styles — in this case, a 17th century Dutch brass chandelier. Baguès kept those chandeliers' brass arms, but substituted clear glass disks for brass drip pans, and colored glass spheres for brass ones (and engraving the largest with cross-hatching). Attuned to decorating trends, and the needs of decorators, the colored glass elements were made hollow, permitted the interiors to be painted in any color to suit the room where the chandelier was destined to hang. In this case that color is a reddish brown. The full drop height, including the original chain with two additional brass links shown separately here, is 36 inches.

Belle Epoque Chandelier
By Maison Baguès
Located in New York, NY
This chandelier was probably made by the Paris bronzier Baguès, circa 1900. The botanical forms of the cage, and the shapes of the rock-crystal prisms, recall the Rococo style of the 18th century. But the sinuous cast-bronze curves channel the Art Nouveau style that was then all the rage. The seamless union of the two styles is a hallmark of the Belle Époque...

Pair of 1930s Veronese Glass Sconces
By Jean-Gabriel Domergue, Veronese
Located in New York, NY
Véronese was established in 1931 by Marcel Barbier. The firm was unique in having a design office in Paris and a glasswork on Murano. They developed a product line of clear translucent glass that was promoted through extensive advertising, and sold from striking modern showrooms in Paris and Nice. Their master glassblower was Giovanni Veronese, but the name was probably meant to evoke the 17th century Venetian painter Paolo Veronese, who depicted glassware and other luxury goods. Launched during the Depression, Véronese devised a lean business model. Rather than having an in-house art director they commissioned designs from independent architects, like Marcel Roux...
