About the Item
These original Thorlux industrial pendants were reclaimed from an electrical substation in the Northwest of England, a region long associated with Britain’s manufacturing backbone. Each shade retains gentle surface wear and a naturally developed patina, offering quiet evidence of decades of functional use. Finished in grey vitreous enamel, the shades were kiln-fired at extremely high temperatures to produce a hard, lustrous surface renowned for its resistance to corrosion and abrasion, a defining characteristic of British industrial quality.
The sharply angled profile was engineered to deliver controlled, directional light over workbenches, control panels, and heavy machinery. This purposeful design translates seamlessly into contemporary interiors, making the pendants ideally suited for task lighting above kitchen islands, work benches, counters, and commercial spaces where focused illumination is essential.
Established in 1936 in Redditch, Worcestershire, Thorlux earned a reputation as one of Britain’s foremost lighting manufacturers. Their fixtures became a familiar sight in factories, workshops, and civic buildings throughout the mid-20th century, valued for their durability, consistency, and precise engineering.
Sensitively restored by Loomlight, each pendant has been professionally rewired to meet modern electrical standards while preserving its original character. Measuring 355 mm in diameter and weighing approximately 1.8 kg, these reclaimed lights offer an authentic piece of British industrial design, ready to be reintroduced into modern living and working environments.
