About the Item

This striking 1960s Italian pendant chandelier, a creation of the acclaimed Gaetano Sciolari for his eponymous company, is a masterful display of modernist geometry and refined glamour. Sciolari, a designer influenced by architecture and film, was known for blending Art Deco, Cubism, and futuristic elements to create highly sought-after, sculptural lighting fixtures. The design showcases his signature style, which combined clean lines, geometric forms, and a sophisticated use of materials to produce dazzling optical effects. The chandelier's core design is defined by its twelve square cubist shades, a key element of Sciolari's popular "Cubic" series. These shades are crafted from thick, clear glass featuring a distinctive, abstract geometric relief or ice-glass pattern. When illuminated, this textured glass refracts the light, creating a sparkling, cool, and luxurious ambiance that enhances the overall visual drama of the piece. The shades are dynamically positioned on a polished chrome-plated steel frame, with six facing upwards and six downwards. This structure attaches to a circular matte black metal disc and a square chrome supporting ceiling column with a matching cup. The shades alternate at three different heights around the disc, adding further visual interest and a sense of architectural structure to the design. Gaetano Sciolari was not only a visionary designer but also a significant figure in the industry, having founded and served as the first president of the Italian Lighting Manufacturers Association (AIDI). His company, Sciolari Lighting, successfully expanded globally, importing designs to the American market through partnerships with major companies like Lightolier and Progress Lighting, making his work highly recognisable and collectible today. His pieces are celebrated for their artistic integrity, widespread appeal, and ability to elevate any space with their timeless, modernist appeal. This specific light is in good vintage condition and has been professionally rewired. It requires twelve E14 screw-in bulbs, with LEDs recommended for energy saving purposes. Dimmable versions are also available if required. Dimensions: H: 70cm W: 45cm D: 45cm
