About the Item

As the spouse of renowned Dutch Golden Age artist Johannes Vermeer, Catharina bolstered his career behind the scenes by managing the household finances and raising their eleven children. Though their marriage was born of pragmatism, a tender romance bloomed over time. Catharina often served as Vermeer’s model, capturing her stoic beauty in iconic works like Woman in Blue Reading a Letter. When Vermeer died bankrupt in 1675, the steadfast Catharina valiantly continued running the family’s art dealership and inn, ensuring her husband's artistic legacy would live on. She protected his renowned canvases until her death in 1684. The three-armed Catherina 229 sconce brings ornate 19th century style to walls with its graceful solid brass form. At 37cm high and 44cm wide, this striking yet refined fixture features intricate curling metalwork bordering the circular frame. Designed centuries ago but modernly wired, the Catherina 229 casts a decadent glow reminiscent of Holland's Golden Age. With its hand-crafted details and warm, antique finish, this wall light perfectly complements the Vermeer collection of electric chandeliers. An elegant fusion of old world charm and contemporary function, the Catherina 229 embodies the mastery of Dutch metal arts. Original historical moulds from the era are utilised to create the brass components. Additionally, casting is still done the old-fashioned way in a greasy type of sand called Brussels’ soil. After the crown has been varnished, skilled artisans assemble the components. Electric crowns have bent hollow brass tubes for the arms. The arms and curls are soldered together. While the crowns are being put together, the electrical wiring and lighting components are covertly inserted. Brink van Keulen, a family-owned business founded in 1946, upholds the art of casting by producing the highest calibre brass chandeliers. Chandeliers by Brink and van Keulen can be found in a number of prestigious churches and monumental buildings in the Netherlands and other parts of the world. Through the transmission of knowledge through many generations, Brink van Keulen has substantially aided in the preservation of the Dutch yellow casting craft. The business is the sole manufacturer of chandeliers using original casting moulds from the 17th century in all of Europe.
