About the Item

An outstanding French 19th-century Louis XVI–style gilt bronze twelve-light chandelier, richly cast with superb neoclassical detail. The chandelier displays elegant, sweeping arms decorated with acanthus leaves and supporting candle-form lights fitted with faux-wax sleeves, evoking the ambiance of traditional candle illumination. The upper section features beautifully sculpted draped swags and tassels with a bead-and-reel border, forming a regal canopy characteristic of high-style Louis XVI design. Below, the central cage is supported by finely modeled griffin heads, their classical form lending strength, mythological symbolism, and sculptural sophistication to the structure. Suspended garlands of floral rosettes and beaded drops accentuate the vertical silhouette, while a deeply cast floral wreath encircles the midsection. Around the body of the chandelier rest a series of expressive cherub masks, each with softly modeled features, adding warmth, charm, and a distinctly French decorative touch. A commanding work of 19th-century craftsmanship, this chandelier captures the elegance, symmetry, and refinement of the Louis XVI period. Its scale, detail, and artistry make it a spectacular focal point for grand entryways, formal dining rooms, or interiors seeking genuine period opulence.

Louis XVI Style Gilt-Bronze Six-Light Chandelier Aux Termes
By Emmanuel-Alfred Beurdeley
Located in Brighton, West Sussex
A Louis XVI Style Gilt-Bronze six-light chandelier 'aux Termes' Attributed to Emmanuel-Alfred (dit Alfred II) Beurdeley, Paris. Modelled with three caryatid term figures holding spiral branches issuing candle nozzles. The whole executed in exceptionally finely cast gilt-bronze with beautiful matte and burnished gilding. The bowl in blue-painted tole. The prototype for this chandelier dates to the end of the eighteenth century, is attributed to the bronzier François Rémond and is in the Nissim de Camondo museum in Paris (Inv. CAM 146). Another, dated to circa 1785, is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (1972.242). This example is attributed to the celebrated ébéniste and bronzier Maison Beurdeley, owing to the fine quality of the gilt-bronze and in relation to a drawing for the model which is held in the Beurdeley archives in the library of the Musée des Arts Decoratifs, Paris. France, Circa 1880. Provenance: Collection Pierre...
