About the Item

Johannes Vermeer (1632 - 1675) painted many Dutch interiors in addition to his famous “Girl with a Pearl Earring”. In the painting ""The Art of Painting"" a beautiful golden chandelier is displayed above the painter and his subject. Dutch historians have noted that such chandeliers permitted artists to demonstrate their expertise at rendering shimmering and refractive brass under changing light conditions. A true testament to their craft and artistry. The majestic two-tier Vermeer 118 chandelier is a prime example of the exquisite craftsmanship of Dutch brass lighting from the 19th century. Each of the two 82cm wide circular stages is illuminated by twelve exquisitely made hollow brass arms that arch gently. Each tier's outside frame is embellished with elaborate curled metalwork that joins at the centre connector. This newly cast showpiece, which is an impressive 80 cm high, is functionally wired for today's LED-lighting. Warm illumination emanates from the polished brass, evoking a bygone era in Holland when opulent pendant lights lighted noble manors and salons everywhere. Original historical moulds from the era are utilised to create the brass components. Additionally, casting is still done the old-fashioned way in a greasy type of sand called Brussels’ soil. After the crown has been varnished, skilled artisans assemble the components. Electric crowns have bent hollow brass tubes for the arms. The arms and curls are soldered together. While the crowns are being put together, the electrical wiring and lighting components are covertly inserted. Brink van Keulen, a family-owned business founded in 1946, upholds the art of casting by producing the highest calibre brass chandeliers. Chandeliers by Brink and van Keulen can be found in a number of prestigious churches and monumental buildings in the Netherlands and other parts of the world. Through the transmission of knowledge through many generations, Brink van Keulen has substantially aided in the preservation of the Dutch yellow casting craft. The business is the sole manufacturer of chandeliers using original casting moulds from the 17th century in all of Europe.
