About the Item
The superb chandelier is constructed with a central column supporting two tiers of scrolling arms, each terminating in circular drip pans and candle-form light holders. Cast in silvered bronze, the arms are decorated with acanthus-leaf patterns and reeded surfaces, their curves sharply defined to emphasize their structure. Four projecting lion masks encircle the base of the stem, each framed by flowing manes that merge into the adjoining scrolls. The lower section of the column is paneled and bordered, tapering into a finial enriched with leaf ornament. Above, the stem rises in alternating faceted and fluted sections with applied foliage and culminates in a large suspension loop.
The decorative program follows a neoclassical arrangement, combining strong symmetry with classical motifs. Twelve lights are distributed across the chandelier in two balanced registers, each set into ribbed drip pans with squared candle sockets above. The arms are heavily cast, with scrolling foliate designs continuing along their length, while the lion masks at the central juncture provide a bold sculptural feature. Smooth and textured surfaces alternate across the stem and mounts, and the silvered finish unifies the composition while emphasizing the cast detail.
This chandelier is attributed to Edward F. Caldwell
Co., the prominent American lighting manufacturer active in New York during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The firm was known for supplying elaborate fixtures for private residences, civic buildings, and major institutions, often inspired by French neoclassical models. The use of silvered bronze, symmetrical multi-light design, and lion mask ornamentation aligns with Caldwell’s documented commissions, demonstrating the workshop’s ability to adapt European decorative traditions to American interiors.
