About the Item

This monumental hanging lamp is an exceptional lighting object from the early twentieth century and originates from the Bruges region in Belgium, an area that was well known at the time for its high level of craftsmanship and metalwork. The lamp is made of copper and glass and, due to its impressive scale and rich design, has a strongly architectural presence. With a diameter of approximately 43.3 inches and a total height of about 82.7 inches including the chain, this was not a fixture intended for a modest interior, but a true statement piece, designed to dominate a large space. The body of the lamp is constructed from heavy copper with a clearly hand-worked surface. Subtle hammer marks and stylized decorative elements give the piece depth and vitality. Around the broad rim runs a crown of eighteen pressed milk-glass roses, each fitted with its own light source. These roses emit a soft, diffused light, allowing the lamp not only to illuminate downward but also to bathe the room in a warm, ambient glow. Beneath the central body hang six slender arms, each terminating in an orange satin-glass shade, again each with its own light. At the center is a seventh light source housed in a larger orange glass cup, directing light downward and visually anchoring the entire composition. The design clearly reflects the transition from the Arts and Crafts movement to early Art Deco. From the Arts and Crafts tradition come the emphasis on craftsmanship, visible handwork, floral motifs, and honest use of materials. At the same time, the symmetry, monumental structure, and more architectural silhouette already anticipate Art Deco. The combination of organic forms with a more structured, rhythmic overall composition places this lamp convincingly in the period circa 1915 to 1935, a time when decorative lighting increasingly became an independent art form. Lamps of this type were created for large, representative interiors. One can imagine them hanging in the entrance hall of a hotel, a grand salon in a town mansion, a bank or corporate office, or an elegant tea room or brasserie. In such settings, the lamp was not only meant to provide light, but also to impress. It functioned as the visual centerpiece of the space, contributing to an atmosphere of luxury, modernity, and refined craftsmanship. When illuminated, the qualities of this lamp truly come into their own. The milk glass produces a soft, diffused ambient light, while the orange satin glass casts a warm, glowing light downward. The copper surfaces capture and amplify this glow with deep, rich reflections. The result is a layered lighting effect typical of the interwar period: functional, yet above all atmospheric and decorative. It is a striking and rare lighting object that not only illuminates a room, but profoundly defines its character and presence. The lamp is wired for both the European as the US electrical network.
