About the Item

A superb antique French Empire-style gilt and Patinated Bronze Chandelier. This chandelier is designed in the French Empire style, executed in gilt and patinated bronze. The structure is suspended from a circular canopy with a gadrooned border, from which eight elongated supports descend, each detailed with gilt foliate mounts at intervals. These supports connect to the circular body of the chandelier, which is centered by a broad bronze ring decorated with a continuous band of gilt acanthus leaves and bordered with ribbed detailing. From this main body extend eight scrolling arms, each terminating in a candleholder with a gilt drip pan and cylindrical candle socket. The underside of the central dish is ornamented with a large gilt acanthus leaf medallion and a pointed finial. The arms of the chandelier are modeled with classical masks and scrolling motifs, providing both structural support and decorative presence. Each arm projects outward in a uniform arrangement to hold the candle branches, creating a balanced circular form. The contrast between the dark patinated bronze and the applied gilding emphasizes the decoration, especially in the acanthus ornament, foliate collars, and other classical details. The overall form follows the Empire tradition of symmetrical, architectural compositions with prominent use of gilt and patinated bronze. This chandelier reflects the production of French Empire decorative arts, where bronze workers combined matte and polished gilding with dark patinated surfaces to create strong contrasts.
