About the Item

A unique antique French Louis XVI style ormolu chandelier, mounted with porcelain flowers and rock crystal pendants. The chandelier is structured with a circular central frame, suspended by four spiraled gilt bronze rods terminating in a canopy of gilt leaves. Twelve candle-form lights are arranged evenly around the frame, each emerging from sculpted gilt bronze floral sockets shaped as open blossoms. The arms are enriched with gilt bronze leaves and scrolling stems that extend outward to support the candleholders. Suspended from the frame are large, faceted rock crystal pendants in teardrop and elongated drop forms, arranged in graduated lengths around the perimeter and beneath the base. Between the gilt foliage, applied porcelain flowers of varying colors are interspersed, including white, pink, and lilac tones, modeled in naturalistic detail. These flowers are affixed among the branches and sockets, providing contrasting decoration against the gilded structure and clear crystal drops. The chandelier follows the Louis XVI style, which emphasized neoclassical forms and decorative motifs such as floral garlands and symmetrical arrangements. French lighting manufacturers of the 19th century often produced such mixed-media chandeliers combining gilt bronze, porcelain flowers, and rock crystal to achieve richly layered decoration. The use of porcelain flowers, in particular, was a distinctive feature associated with luxury French chandeliers, often produced in collaboration with porcelain manufacturers such as Sèvres or Meissen for export and domestic interiors.
