About the Item

A magnificent antique French Neoclassical Empire figural gilt and patinated bronze chandelier. The chandelier is suspended from a domed corona composed of pierced scrolling acanthus elements, alternating between gilt and patinated bronze bands. From this upper section descend four patinated bronze female figures in long, draped garments, each holding a gilt urn in front of her. These figures act as caryatid supports, rising from circular bases encircled by gilt collars with textured decoration. The central bowl-shaped body of the chandelier is cast in patinated bronze, its upper rim mounted with a gilt band enriched with applied roundels and scrolling acanthus details. Eight candle arms project outward in two tiers, each formed as a gilt and patinated bronze scrolling element terminating in a candle cup with a wide drip pan. The candle sockets are set with white cylindrical sleeves simulating candles. The arms are detailed with foliage ornament, continuing the Neoclassical decorative scheme. At the lower edge of the bowl hangs a gilt finial, cast with foliate decoration and a rounded terminus. The combination of gilt and patinated bronze is characteristic of the Empire style, emphasizing classical symmetry and figural ornament. The use of full-length caryatid figures, urn motifs, and formal acanthus scrollwork reflects the influence of Greco-Roman models popular in early 19th-century France. This chandelier represents the grandeur of Empire design, uniting sculptural figural elements with structured architectural form.
