About the Item

A fine antique Russian Neoclassical gilt bronze and cut crystal chandelier. The chandelier is structured with a tiered cage-like frame composed of scrolling gilt bronze arms, from which multiple strands of cut crystal prisms are suspended. The lower section forms a rounded basket, densely set with oval and pointed crystal drops, arranged within circular gilt bronze medallions centered with a gilt rosette. Eight candle-form lights project from the midsection on scrolling acanthus-mounted arms, each fitted with circular drip pans adorned with crystal prisms. Rising from the arms, the chandelier is crowned with a multi-tiered cage canopy, hung with further crystal prisms and garlands, terminating in cascading drops. This chandelier belongs to the Russian Neoclassical tradition, where gilt bronze was combined with precision-cut crystal to create luminous lighting objects. The gilt bronze mounts are chased with acanthus leaf scrolls, rosettes, and foliate ornament. The crystal components include both faceted prisms and elongated pointed drops, all suspended from hand-wrought mounts. The floral rosettes at the center of the circular frames anchor the design, balancing the metal and crystal elements. Russian Neoclassical lighting of this type was produced in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, drawing influence from both French and Northern European styles. Workshops in St. Petersburg and Moscow, often working under imperial patronage, were known for combining French gilt bronze techniques with Russian-cut crystal, which was prized for its clarity. Chandeliers such as this were made for noble and court interiors, reflecting the high level of decorative arts production in Russia during the Neoclassical period.
