About the Item

A superb antique Russian neoclassical gilt bronze, opaline glass, and crystal chandelier. The structure centers on a baluster-form opaline glass vase, mounted with gilt bronze elements at the upper and lower sections. A circular gilt bronze ring, decorated with applied floral motifs, secures the midsection, while acanthus-form mounts extend downward into a pinecone finial. Six candle-form light branches project outward from the central body, each supported by scrolling gilt bronze arms. These arms carry socketed candle lights and are dressed with cascading strings of faceted crystals and large teardrop pendants. The chandelier’s frame rises into a gilt bronze corona, pierced and shaped with open latticework. From this crown, strands of graduated cut crystal beads descend in symmetrical lines, linking to the body and branches, with additional pendant drops suspended at regular intervals. The central glass vase is flanked by gilt bronze mounts of stylized drapery and foliate design, binding the structure while introducing vertical emphasis. The lower bronze mount is cast with radiating leaves and terminates in a finely modeled pinecone finial. Russian neoclassical lighting of this type often combined opaline glass with gilt bronze and crystal, aligning with late 18th to early 19th century stylistic traditions influenced by French and Imperial workshops.
