About the Item

A large and superb antique Russian neoclassical style gilt bronze and crystal chandelier. The chandelier is designed in a tent and basket form, suspended from a gilt bronze corona surmounted by radiating palmettes and stars. Chains of faceted oval and twisted crystal drops descend in alternating strands, connecting to a circular openwork bronze ring decorated with repeating pierced circles and mounted with small foliate ornaments. The basket section below continues with graduated faceted crystal drops and prisms that terminate at a central gilt bronze ring. The chandelier features three candle-form lights arranged within, supported on scrolling gilt bronze arms. The gilt bronze corona supports twisted rods and openwork elements from which the upper swags of crystal hang, descending toward the circular band where pierced roundels alternate with foliate brackets. From this frame, rows of faceted crystal drops fall in graduated strands, terminating in elongated prisms that give weight to the lower basket. At the center, three arms extend inward from the gilt bronze ring, each holding a candle-form light with drip pans and beaded edges. The lower section culminates in a circular finial surrounded by further crystal pendants. The underside is lined with a cobalt blue glass bowl, overlaid with crystal drops and prisms, completing the layered structure of the piece. This chandelier reflects the Russian neoclassical taste of the early 1800s, where gilt bronze and cut crystal were combined in both tent-and-basket and basket-shaped lighting. The use of pierced openwork mounts, palmette finials, and colored glass bowls is consistent with Russian Empire models, which drew inspiration from French prototypes while incorporating distinctive ornamental details.
