The Italian lighting design company Arteluce was established in 1939 by the Venetian designer/entrepreneur Gino Sarfatti (1912-1984). He designed and produced more than 400 lamps in his lifetime, focusing on giving his designs a Minimalist yet expressive aesthetic while experimenting with different materials. In both 1954 and 1955, Arteluce was awarded the ADI Compasso d'Oro. In the 1950s and 1960s, Arteluce was an important forum for many of the leading Italian designers including Sergio Asti, F. Albini, M. Vignelli, V. Viganò and L. Meneghetti. In 1973, Sarfatti sold his business to Flos and retired to Lake Como. Several of Sarfatti's original designs are housed permanently in museums like MoMA in New York. In 2012, the first retrospective exhibition of Sarfatti's work took place at the Triennale Design Museum in Milan.
