About the Item

This chandelier was probably made by the Paris bronzier Baguès, circa 1900. The botanical forms of the cage, and the shapes of the rock-crystal prisms, recall the Rococo style of the 18th century. But the sinuous cast-bronze curves channel the Art Nouveau style that was then all the rage. The seamless union of the two styles is a hallmark of the Belle Époque that then flourished. At the time, designers faced the challenge of adapting the traditional, candlelit chandelier form to the electrical light bulb. But when turned on, their brightness made it hard to look at the chandelier, and when suspended from above, they cast an unflattering light. That's why bulbs were often hidden in the frame, or shielded with silk shades. This chandelier had five sockets behind glass-beaded trelliswork, and another five mounted to the arms. We considered that overkill, so we refitted the arms for candles. Now the chandelier can shimmer from within at the flick of a switch, or cast flickering candlelight at the strike of a match, or both, should it suit the occasion or the whim of the owner.

Pair of 1930s Veronese Glass Sconces
By Veronese, Jean-Gabriel Domergue
Located in New York, NY
Véronese was established in 1931 by Marcel Barbier. The firm was unique in having a design office in Paris and a glasswork on Murano. They developed a product line of clear translucent glass that was promoted through extensive advertising, and sold from striking modern showrooms in Paris and Nice. Their master glassblower was Giovanni Veronese, but the name was probably meant to evoke the 17th century Venetian painter Paolo Veronese, who depicted glassware and other luxury goods. Launched during the Depression, Véronese devised a lean business model. Rather than having an in-house art director they commissioned designs from independent architects, like Marcel Roux...
