About the Item
A beautiful pendant model 64-401 by Finnish designer Yki Nummi manufactured by Orno for Stockmann. The modernistic lamp features two perspex shades layered on top of each other and hanging by the cord and connected with brass parts. The shades give a calming shade of light and is suitable in areas that need down light directly while at the same time giving a lovely atmosphere all around. The lamp embodies the simplicity of Nummi's design and his tendencies towards using geometrical shapes.
The lamp is in good condition with original patina on the brass parts. The perspex parts have some scratches due to friction between them consistent with age and use, but they hardly show. The lamp has the manufacturer's labels worn out. They usually carry the text "Yki Nummi Design" Orno Stockmann.
Yrjö Kalevi "Yki" Nummi 1925 – 1984) was a renowned Finnish designer and artist. He initially studied physics and mathematics but later switched to design, graduating from the Helsinki University of Art and Design in 1950.
Nummi is best known for his innovative work with light fixtures, particularly his use of acrylic materials. His designs are celebrated for their simplicity and functionality, often featuring geometric shapes like spheres, cubes, and paraboloids. Some of his most famous works include the "Modern Art" table lamp and the "Lokki" (Seagull) light fixtures.
In addition to his work in lighting design, Nummi also designed home utility goods, book illustrations, and wallpaper. His contributions to design earned him several accolades, including gold medals at the Milan Triennale in 1954 and 1957, and the Pro Finlandia Medal in 1971.
