About the Item
A fantastic chandelier by Rupert Nikoll manufactured in Austria in 1960s.
Six curved arms hold cream colored pleated fabric shades. The fixture is decoreated with large cut glass beads.
The brass parts are in very good original condition with little patina and have a warm aged hue. The lamp shades are renewed.
The light is ready for use, it has been completely restored. The entire wiring, all cables and bulb sockets have been renewed.
The fixture has six sockets for medium or standard Edison screw base bulbs type E26 or E27. It is possible to install this fixture in all countries (US, UK, Europe, Asia, Canada,) although it may be necessary to purchase different light bulbs (e.g. LED or filament) suitable to local electricity.
The height of the body incl. shades is 15 inch (38 cm). The total drop in the photos is ca. 30 inches (77 cm).
The lamp is an example of outstanding Austrian design from this period and high-quality craftsmanship with attention to detail.
In the mid-1920s, Josef Frank and Oskar Wlach founded the furnishing company "Haus
Garten" which was sold to Julius Theodor Kalmar after Josef Frank emigrated to Sweden before the second world war.
Founded in Vienna by Julius August Kalmar in 1881, Kalmar first specialized in the production of handcrafted objects of cast bronze.
After the turn of the century, Julius Theodor Kalmar, son of the original founder, studied under the renowned Austrian architect and designer Josef Hoffmann.
In the following years the company realized modern lighting concepts and designs. Kalmar worked together with the Austrian Werkbund and the most important Austrian architects like Josef Frank, Oskar Wlach, Oswald Haerdtl, Clemens Holzmeister, Ernst Plischke, and Oskar Strnad.
Kalmar used traditional materials like glass, bronze, brass, and wood. His designs, including this chandelier, lacked ornament but favoured instead a purist aesthetics. Kalmar produced lightings of great craftsmanship, high quality workmanship, and timeliess design.

Rupert Nikoll
The Rupert Nikoll lighting company’s biggest claim to glory came from producing work by the skilled Austrian jeweler and lighting designer Emil Stejnar. He designed several lighting and mirror pieces for the Austrian company. Stejnar had a penchant for symmetrical, rounded forms, often emulating starbursts or floral blossoms in his designs.
Very little information is recorded about the Rupert Nikoll lighting company or its namesake. The company was established in Vienna, Austria, in 1908, and later opened a branch in Munich, Germany. In 1966, its Vienna factory was relocated to Ober-Grafendorf, Austria, about 40 miles away. The company went out of business in 1986, closing the doors of all of its factories.
Decades later, Rupert Nikoll chandeliers and floor lamps still stand the test of time. One of Rupert Nikoll’s most famous designs is the Sputnik pendant lamp, created in the 1960s by Stejnar. With several lighted spokes extending out in every direction, forming a shape similar to a dandelion puff, the Sputnik pendant lamp earned the nickname “Pusteblume,” or “Dandelion” in English. Many imitators have replicated the Sputnik design, but the originals are highly valued by collectors and interior designers. The company is also celebrated for its Sumatra floor lamp, crafted from brass and featuring a curved spine and bipodal base.
