About the Item
Amazing ceiling lamp or chandelier made by Mazzega, a prominent designer for Murano, Italy. The piece consists of a chain from which a gold-finished metal structure hangs and Murano glass leaves that can be separated individually. Each glass leaf is exceptionally detailed. The interior has a rough finish—this creates a visual illusion, as they appear frozen due to their frost-like texture. The exterior has a smooth finish; this interplay of textures creates a pleasing lighting effect. The composition of the leaves is closed, giving the piece a compact and elegant appearance.
About the "granigliato" technique
The frosted effect of the glass leaves is achieved with the granigliato technique, which consists of applying small fragments of glass (graniglia) to the hot glass, thus making the small fragments adhere to the surface. When the piece is heated again, the rough effect seen in the lamp leaves is created.
Another way to make granigliato is by using a fine metal mesh. Glass is sprayed over it, creating glass particles that adhere to the piece, creating the frosted effect.
