About the Item

Chandelier LYFA. Denmark, 1930s. Yellow painted opaline glass shades. Structure in antiqued brass. Measurements: 90 cm (height); 60 cm (diameter). This Lyfa chandelier, made in the 1930s, is a testimony to early Danish design, influenced by Art Deco, and to the aesthetic and technical experimentation that characterized the firm. The set, made of aged brass and opaline glass painted in a sober yellow tone, boasts a serene presence, with a patina that underlines its authenticity and the passage of time. The structure is organized around a tubular brass axis, enriched with discreet decorative elements in the form of small discs that interrupt the verticality with subtlety and rhythm. From this axis emerge three arms that describe a short and contained arc, culminating in cylindrical cups seated on inverted pinnacles, conceived as support and transition to the screens. These, made of double-layered opaline glass, are similar to the principle of superimposition developed by Poul Henningsen (a larger screen embracing a smaller one), a resource that modulates the light delicately, softening the glare and avoiding direct glare. Although its formal language is reminiscent of Henningsen's optical research, this Lyfa piece has a distinctive character, sensual in its proportions. Because of its rarity, specimens such as this one have become collector's items today, valued both for their material beauty and their historical importance in the development of Scandinavian lighting design.
