After early artistic training at the École des Beaux-Arts in Nancy and Paris, Schneider worked with Daum before founding the Schneider Frères Wolf glassworks in 1913 with his brother Ernest. Despite interruptions from World War I, the Schneider factory flourished in the 1920s, becoming celebrated for its innovative techniques, including the mastery of marqueterie de verre (glass marquetry) learned from Gallé artists. Schneider’s production was renowned for combining Art Nouveau influences with the emerging Art Deco style, producing cameo glass with intricate floral and animal motifs, wheel-carved designs, and new methods like colored powdered glass applied between layers. The company gained wide recognition, supplying prestigious department stores such as Galeries Lafayette and Le Bon Marché under the “Le Verre Français” brand, and specialized shops with pieces signed “Schneider.” Despite a decline during the 1930s, Charles Schneider’s impact on French decorative glass remains significant. This chandelier is a rare and collectible example of Schneider’s Art Deco lighting, embodying French craftsmanship and design innovation from the golden era of decorative arts.
