About Choisy-le-Roi Glassworks
Located just outside Paris, the Choisy-le-Roi glassworks, founded in 1820, played an important role in the evolution of French glassmaking. Under director Georges Bontemps, the manufactory rediscovered two legendary techniques once lost since antiquity: the Murano filigree glass method (1838) and the ancient Roman millefiori process. These innovations inspired iconic French houses—including Baccarat, Saint-Louis, and Cristalleries de Clichy—to create celebrated paperweights and decorative objects, even though Choisy-le-Roi itself did not capitalize on this success and temporarily closed in 1849.
The glassworks was revived in the late 1890s by Léon Houdaille, formerly of Sèvres. Alongside electrical household production, an Art Nouveau studio was established, with members of the Muller family contributing their renowned craftsmanship.
A turning point came in 1932, when Choisy-le-Roi merged with Cristallerie de Sèvres, bringing exceptional mastery of molded-pressed glass—the same technique used by René Lalique, Sabino, Pierre d’Avesn, and Edmond Etling. From 1932 to 1940, the glassworks produced outstanding creations for Jean Luce and Etling (who used his own molds). After World War II, Pierre d’Avesn joined and designed several of his major works there.
The story of Choisy-le-Roi came to a close in 1952, when Houdaille’s son ended the glassmaking activity, leaving behind a legacy of innovation and artistry.
